8 advantages of lithium ion battery

A lithium ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery which is commonly used for portable electronics, electric vehicles and for military and aero space applications. It uses an intercalated lithium compound as one electrode material, compared to metallic lithium used in a non-rechargeable lithium battery.
Advantages

  • It is light in weight and has high energy density, able to store 150 watt hours electricity per kg of battery.
  • It is expected to save 10-15 percent of cost of e-vehicles .
  • As ISRO has transferred its indigenous lithium ion battery technology to private industry for commercial use, industry can achieve self-sufficiency and increase in scale.
  • Have 5000 cycles or more compared to just 400 – 500 cycles of lead acid batteries.
  • Li – ion batteries also comparatively low maintenance and don’t require scheduled cycling to maintain battery life.
  • Lithium ion batteries also have low self discharge rate off Aaron 1.5-2% per month.
  • Lithium ion batteries have no memory effect, detrimental process where repeated partial discharge cycles can cause a battery to remember a lower capacity.
  • They do not contain toxic cadmium which makes them easier to dispose compared to nickel cadmium batteries.
